Beefed Up Security
Security will be beefed up on trains and at stations for remaining Rugby World Cup matches and other events in Auckland in coming weeks.
After issues on the train network in particular on September 9 (opening night of the Rugby World Cup), Auckland Transport has directed the region’s rail operator, Veolia, to address a number of concerns.
The extra measures are detailed in a report presented to the Auckland Council today. The report is available at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz
They include:
• Security staff on every train carriage
• Security at all 43 stations across the network and at other points along train lines where people may access tracks (which leads to train stoppages)
An extra 100 buses will also be pressed into service to transport fans to Eden Park in particular. A number of these buses were not available on September 9, a Friday, as they were required for peak commuting and school bus services. Extra drivers are being brought in by bus operators from outside of Auckland.
Auckland Transport CEO David Warburton told Councillors that every available bus, train and ferry in the region was utilised on September 9. However the unprecedented numbers of people attending festivities in the CBD in particular led to delays across the network from mid-morning onwards.
“One delay has a domino effect and ripples out across the region,” he says.
Today’s report included an “Incident Log” from Veolia which detailed a series of issues which contributed to train delays. They included people walking on tracks, emergency buttons being pressed, people riding on the outside of carriages and a fire extinguisher being discharged on-board.
Meanwhile, Auckland Transport has established a register for those people who may have missed the Eden park match on Friday night due to transport-related delays. To date 16 people have registered. The hotline number is: 0800 301 011
