Mainland Press Now Launching a Weekend Edition

The directors and management of Mainland Press are delighted to announce that Mainland Press, Christchurch’s only locally owned and operated newspaper, will be publishing a second weekly edition starting October. The announcement was first made to staff on Monday and was released to the public in this Wednesday’s paper.

Mainland Press will continue to publish a mid-week edition on Wednesday but will launch a weekend edition on a Friday.

After many months of research and positive feedback the decision has been made to go to twice-weekly to give readers and advertisers more options.

The company found there was a gap in the Christchurch market for a community paper on a Friday to inform readers what was happening in Christchurch over the weekend.

Mainland Press will be the only community newspaper in the city publishing on a Wednesday and Friday.

Managing Director Pier Smulders says “while many newspapers are finding their markets challenging and retrenching, Mainland Press is growing and doubling its circulation. We are delighted that as a locally owned business we are able to make this commitment to Christchurch in very challenging times, and thank our advertisers and readers for their continued support. We plan to continue in our mission to provide the best media products in the Christchurch market.”

General Manager Sales, Peter Hampton says “we have always taken an interest in what our readers and advertisers say and have been overwhelmed with the great feedback we are getting. As a locally owned media business it is much easier for us to work closer with our market and understand what it needs.

“Friday’s time frame is ideal for people planning their weekends and to run local stories which lead into Saturday and Sunday. It is also an important time of the week for advertisers to promote their specials and events.”

Mainland Press publishes the Mainland Press newspaper, the Bay Harbour News, Best Motorbuys, Buy Sell & Exchange and CC magazine and websites. After the February 22 earthquake, CTV moved into the Mainland Press building and the two companies are working to build the strongest local newsroom and a cross media sales presence.
