Maori Television’s biggest weekend in history

Free-to-air Rugby World Cup 2011 coverage tops viewership ratings

Maori Television’s live free-to-air broadcasts of Rugby World Cup 2011 are proving popular, with New Zealanders watching in record numbers.

Friday’s All Blacks game against Japan, called by Te Arahi Maipi, Buck Shelford and Karl Te Nana, saw the broadcaster achieve the largest audience for any channel that day.

It also represented Maori Television’s largest ever rating with 696,430 tuning in for the game, almost double the previous best audience recorded a week earlier for the England v Argentina game in Dunedin.

Maori Television followed this historic result with 487,730 viewers on Saturday for the Australia v Ireland game at Eden Park, called by Te Arahi Maipi, Gavin Hastings and Mark Ella. Maori Television was again the most watched channel during the 8.30pm – 10.15pm timeslot.

Maori Television is available on Freeview channel 5 and Sky TV channel 19. It’s also available through the old analogue network with a UHF aerial. Te Reo is on Freeview channel 24 (a Freeview satellite digital receiver plus a satellite dish are required) and on Sky TV channel 59.
