Trout fishing season prospects for Otago

While the weather is taking it’s time to warm up and reveal the true feeling of spring, the winter was surprisingly mild setting up good conditions for the start of the new fishing season on October 1.

With the opening falling on a Saturday it will be a great opportunity to get the whole family out and wet their appetite for the rest of the season.

How’s it all looking?

The large glacial lakes continue to fish well and Central Otago dams are full providing some great opportunities with fish likely to be patrolling the shallow margins. Poolburn, Falls, and Onslow Dams will experience the annual influx of hut owners for the opening with plenty of room for others wanting to experience the wonderful attributes of these high country fisheries. Weather conditions can change quickly so travel prepared.

Lake Dunstan is looking superb with equal opportunities for both boaties and shore anglers alike and Fish and Game would like to hear from anyone that catches a tagged fish. Anglers are asked to record where this fish was caught and note the details on the tag if the fish is released. All information should be forwarded to Fish and Game in Dunedin or Cromwell.

Streams such as the Shag and Waikouaiti are worth a look if rivers to the south get an early flush and become discolored, and the Upper Taieri is always a good option if river conditions allow. Pomahaka and Waipahi Rivers can produce early mayfly hatches and the Tokomairiro and Lower Clutha Rivers will be worth fishing for large browns targeting smelt and the whitebait runs.

Fish and Game has continued with the annual stocking programmes of reservoirs and dams throughout the region, and while the recently released fish won’t be of size this season, existing stock will be available and in good condition. Fishing clubs will be organizing Take A Kid Fishing events throughout the region so watch for local advertising.

Anglers are reminded to check their regulation guide as there are several changes in Otago for the 2011/12 season and that the major lake tributaries, backcountry fisheries and Manorburn Dam don’t open until November 1.

Rivers and waterways deserve respect so keep it safe, be tidy kiwis, and don’t forget to carry those all important fishing licences which can be purchased from local agents or on the website www.fishandgame.org.nz
