On Thursday 6 October the sixth Sport Wellington Big Annual Buggy Walk will wheel its way through the spring blooms of the Wellington Botanic Gardens.
The October Buggy Walk is the largest of the monthly buggy walks, tying in with the end of the Botanic Gardens Spring Festival. The Sport Wellington Buggy Walks are free monthly events that take place all over the Wellington region. They are a walking initiative developed by Sport Wellington and the Greater Wellington Regional Council which encourages mothers, fathers, grandparents and caregivers to get active with their young ones in the parks and open spaces of Wellington.
The Buggy Walk event has continued to grow since its introduction in 2006, with around 1000 participants taking part in 2010. The Buggy Walks have been recognised for their focus on providing a free community service by winning a Living Streets Aotearoa Golden Foot Award in 2009 for Best Small Walking Project.
“The event has grown significantly in the past few years with word of mouth getting around that its loads of fun, free and a great way to meet new people” says Buggy Walk organiser Tania Atkinson.
More than just a walk in the park the Big Annual Buggy Walk is a social gathering with live entertainment, free Caffe L’Affare coffee, a BBQ, face painting, spot prizes and games including a ‘Dress up your Buggy’ competition. Live entertainment is provided by Dave and Camille from Classic Hits 90.1FM, Fairy Trina and Maz Hermon and James Coyle from the band Roy G. and the Bivinators.
Two major spot prizes have been donated from local businesses including the use of a Mini Countryman for the weekend courtesy of Jeff Gray Mini Garage and a Mountain Buggy Swift Limited Edition bundle from Baby on the Move.
So bring your baby and buggy down to The Dell on Thursday 6 October and join the Buggy walk movement!
