Political system and referendum to be explained to migrants

MEDIA RELEASE

New Zealand’s political system and referendum to be explained to migrants

Settlement Support - Whangarei offers a free seminar on New Zealand’s Political System and Referendum 2011 for migrants and newcomers, on Wednesday the 12 October, from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Whangarei Migrant Centre.

Participants will be given an overview of New Zealand’s political system, focusing on the 2011 Referendum on the voting system.

It will explain MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) voting, currently used to elect Parliament, and the four other options that will be on the November ballot.

“Many newcomers don’t understand the way New Zealand‘s democracy works and how to get a voice in it,” says Settlement Support Coordinator Ellen Altshuler.

“With the general elections and the Referendum coming up in November this seminar is an opportunity to take a closer look at the voting system and have a say.”

Ellen says one of the goals of Settlement Support is to provide newcomers with mainstream information so they can participate in public life. Settlement Support - Whangarei will continue to run information seminars and workshops to bring newcomers up to speed with information that most New Zealanders are able to take for granted.

The seminar is open to anyone who wants to increase their understanding of the political system. The event runs from 5:30pm until 7pm at the Whangarei Migrant Centre, 71 Bank Street. Tea, coffee and a snack are included. Everyone is welcome to attend.
