Capital Connection fare increase

29 September 2011

Capital Connection fare increase

KiwiRail’s Tranz Scenic has today confirmed there will be a fare increase for the Capital Connection service between Palmerston North and Wellington effective 1 November 2011.

“Ticket prices are reviewed by KiwiRail every year and while the exact fare increase has yet to be confirmed, cash fares and multi-trip tickets will increase by up to 5 percent,” says KiwiRail’s General Manager Passenger Services, Deborah Hume.

The fare increase for the Capital Connection service is in line with the 5 percent fare increase for Tranz Metro service’s multi-trip and monthly fares which is also taking effect on 1 November.

“KiwiRail is committed to continuing the Capital Connection, but as there is no subsidy for operating the service, we need to do that commercially by reviewing our fares.

“The fares also reflect the extra amenities the Capital Connection service provides, including an onboard toilet, spacious seating, power points for laptops and a licensed café carriage.

“The 1 November fare increase will assist in our efforts to provide a commercially sustainable commuter service for the Manawatu region,” Dr Hume says.
