Kiwis embrace TV recycling
Midway through a scheme to recycle old cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions, Kiwis have returned more than 10,000 old TV sets for recycling.
The Great TV Take Back began a week ago [Wednesday, September 21] and already organisers are delighted at the response.
Sets can be returned to 20 participating Warehouse stores around the country for recycling (see list below). The programme runs until Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
The Warehouse Sustainability Manager Trevor Johnston
says that as the scheme had no precedent in New Zealand, it
was difficult to know what the response would
be.
“We’re stoked that so many old TVs are coming in,
but we suspect there must be thousands more still out
there,” he said. “We’re getting well over 1,000 sets a
day. It shows just how seriously Kiwis take
recycling.”
Mr Johnston said The Warehouse was reminding people to bring back their old TVs before the scheme ends on October 4th.
All CRT TVs returned will be recycled in an environmentally-responsible manner. Ninety six per cent of the set components will be recycled.
Participating The Warehouse stores are: Albany, Ashburton, Belfast, Bell Block, Eastgate, Fraser Cove, Gisborne, Greymouth, Hastings, Invercargill, Manukau, Masterton, Nelson, Palmerston North, Petone, South Dunedin, Te Rapa, Timaru, Waipapa, Whangarei
