The Region's Biggest Ever Landscaping Feature Underway At Claudelands
More than forty people are working hard and fast to transform half an acre of Claudelands Events Centre into the biggest and most diverse landscaping spectacular the region has ever seen.
Well over 1000 man hours, 250 tonne of rocks and many thousands of plants have gone into creating 'Brooklyn Gardens', a major feature of the 27th Waikato Home & Garden Show which opens on Thursday.
Creator of the super-feature, Gary Bjeering, sounding tired but exhilarated today said the finishing touches to the stairway to heaven on his sculptural extravaganza were being put into place today and biggest outdoor exhibition the show has ever presented was looking 'sensational'.
The adventurous feature showcases the geological natural history of the greater Waikato including its volcanic and sedimentary pasts and incorporates an elevated and suspended cascading stream and forms part of the massive Brooklyn Gardens.
Brooklyn Gardens is also the site of the NZ Landscape Design Awards. This year the entries have been built up on existing tarmac, which has required the importation of over 100 tonnes of materials for the awards site alone. Guest international designer Freddie Fisher has personally invested in a shipment of hand selected stone from the West Coast's wild rivers for his design.
NZ Landscape Awards contestant, Sam Newsome, has trawled through the extensive quarry of McDonald's Lime at Te Kuiti to choose selected stone for his design, which features over 30 tonne of rock. Some individual specimen monolith rocks may weigh up to 10 tonne.
