Draft Plan for the Region’s public transport now available

Draft Plan for the Region’s public transport now available

The draft Regional Public Transport Plan 2012-15, which looks at all forms of public transport in our region, is now open for community submissions and feedback.

The draft Plan sets out the role of public transport for the next six years. Bay of Plenty Regional Council Acting Strategic Development Group Manager Garry Maloney said that this was an opportunity for the community to be involved in setting the future direction of public transport in the Bay of Plenty.

“The Plan outlines how public transport will contribute to an affordable, safe and sustainable transport system in an efficient and effective manner,” he said.

“We now need to hear from the community to ensure that we have the region’s support for what is in the draft Plan.”

The draft Regional Public Transport Plan includes an outline of bus services people can expect in the future, how the system will provide for rural residents and how funding will be managed.

“With increasing fuel costs and a growing population, the public transport system is becoming more and more important in our region,” Mr Maloney said.

“It is crucial that we get this Plan right, and I urge people to send in their thoughts and help us to ensure our public transport system best suits the needs of the community.”

Submissions close 4pm on Monday 7 November 2011. All submissions received will be acknowledged and considered in the development of the final Bay of Plenty Regional Public Transport Plan. Hearings are expected to start in late November 2011.
