Public transport views sought

Taranaki’s public transport services are under the microscope and the public has an opportunity to make their views known.

The Taranaki Regional Council has prepared a draft Regional Public Transport Plan for 2012-2022, which is open for public consultation until 1 November.

The plan outlines public transport services the Council intends to provide in the region, with a particular focus on the next three years, and sets out a programme of action.

The Council’s Director-Operations, Rob Phillips, says existing public transport services are jointly funded by the Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency. But with increased funding pressures on central Government, it is unlikely any additional funding for new public transport services will be available.

“The Council plans to consolidate existing services with a continuing focus on fine-tuning them,” he says.

“We’re keen to hear what people think of the draft plan, and whether they have other good ideas we can pursue,” says Mr Phillips.

“Essentially we want to hear what people think of existing public transport services, what improvements they’d like to see, and where any gaps are.”

Copies of the draft plan and submission forms are also available at district council offices and libraries in the region, and at the Taranaki Regional Council office, 47 Cloten Road, Stratford.
