Free workshop for making funky creations for RWC2011 street parade
ROTORUA 17.10.11: Locals participating in Sunday’s Rugby World Cup 2011 street parade are being invited to take part in a free workshop this week to create funky accessories for the parade.
The ‘Parade Art’ workshop is being led by community art adventurer Jill Walker at Rotorua Arts Village on Thursday [20 October] from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
Rotorua District Council (RDC) is encouraging people to get dressed in their favourite team colours and head to the Lakeside Village Green on Sunday [23 October] to take part in the parade. The parade starts at 4pm and makes its way to the Energy Events Centre for the final Fanzone where an array of entertainment will be on offer before screening live coverage of the RWC2011 grand final match.
RDC community arts officer Kiri Jarden says organisers are keen to have lots of Rotorua people involved in the parade.
“To inspire participation and provide the community with some hands-on fun we want locals to come along to the ‘Parade Art’ workshop.
"Participants need to bring along resources to use in their art making such as flags, or any other rugby world cup memorabilia, so they can be incorporated into their creations. Old hats, bike helmets, and light weight back packs can also be transformed into fabulous headgear.”
Some materials will be provided including glues, tapes, glitter and fabric.
The free workshop is open to anyone who wants to join in the fun of the final RWC2011 match parade. Children will need to be accompanied by a caregiver.
