Time Banking is Taking Off!

Time Banking is Taking Off!

The Wellington South Time Bank is being officially launched on Saturday 29th October at the Island Bay Community Centre.

Time Banking utilises time rather than money as a way of trading skills within a community. Time Bank members share their skills with other members and earn time credits for the work that they do. These credits can then be used to purchase services from other members of the Time Bank community. Everyone’s time in considered equal in the Time Bank, regardless of the skill being traded. It sounds simple, yet according to its founder Edgar Cahn, Time Banking also has profound effects on communities.

In his book ‘No More Throw-Away People’ Cahn examines the enormous potential of Time Banking to strengthen and transform communities. Recognising the value of non-market economy skills such as mothering, basic home help, friendship, and listening. The concept brings ‘wealth’ in the form of friendship and a sense of community.

The Wellington South Time Bank launch kicks off on Saturday the 29th from 1 - 3pm, with an official opening by Paul Eagle, followed by music from local musician Fraser Ross and a sausage sizzle. You can sign up as a member and meet some other traders in your community. Push play will be there to keep the kids entertained, so bring the family along.

If you’re not sure what skills you have to offer or what the Time Bank could offer you, come along and get some ideas; Child minding, sewing, cleaning, gardening, dog walking, painting, yoga, home help, massage, cooking…the possibilities are endless. Everyone has something to offer and gain from Time Banking.
