DJ Spell Battles Auckland’s Finest DJs to Become New Zealand Red Bull Thre3Style Champion!

The New Zealand Red Bull Thre3Style final reached new musical highs on Friday night. 800 party goers crammed into ‘The Studio’ to witness New Zealand’s finest DJ’s face off in a battle to get the dance floor rocking to claim the Thre3Style National Title.

Combining the Auckland regionals and National finals into one night, gave the crowd plenty to cheer for. The DJ’s had their work cut out for them, once they brought the goods, the dance floor was heaving with party goers.

After 4 hours of party rocking beats ranging from Old Skool Funk to Star War Themes, the Wellington Regional winner, DJ Spell, was also crowned New Zealand’s Red Bull Thre3Style Champion. He narrowly beat the Auckland regional winner, DJ Paydirt, in the final.

DJ Spell describes himself as Hip Hop. His defining moment was at aged 10 watching Run DMC vs Jason Nevines ‘It’s Like That’ on TV and wanting to be able to dance like them. The dance jams he attended ultimately exposed him to the elements that make the world of Hip Hop, one of which being DJ’ing. That became his calling.

“I grew up in a very musical family, so this lifestyle was a natural fit for me”.

DJ Spell will now visit Canada for the first time and represent New Zealand at the Red Bull Thre3Style World Finals in late 2011 and hopefully bring a world title and massive bragging rights back home.

Following DJ Spells announcement as New Zealand’s Red Bull Thre3Style Champion, the crowd was treated to the musical and visual art work of Australia’s Sampology, till the doors closed on the second Thre3style competition to be held in New Zealand.

Red Bull Thre3style is an international event series where New Zealand’s finalist will compete against the winners from twelve countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, France, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and the United Kingdom.

Red Bull Thre3Style is an innovative concept that gives highly skilled DJs a platform to battle, perform, gain notoriety and express themselves in a party atmosphere. Eight DJs fight for the crowd’s favour, each with a 15 minute set that must contain at least three different musical genres (with no mixing programs allowed). A panel of music industry judges selects the winners based on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, stage presence and crowd reaction.
