Bull whisperer and baker to judge at Show
Pukekohe cattle farmer Catherine Rawnsley will be judging Lowline and Murray Grey cattle at this year’s Canterbury A&P Show. Rawnsley will be better known to Show visitors as the Mum of two with the signature dish of Neenish Tarts from TV3’s New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker.
She may be more widely known for her baking skills but Rawnsley is a recognised beef cattle judge and successful Angus exhibitor who has earned the nickname ‘the bull whisperer’ because she is an expert at training bulls. Catherine has a wealth of judging knowledge and Show preparation. Along with her father, she has held demonstrations on how to prepare and present cattle for the Show ring.
Rawnsley is regularly called on by farmers to assist with training cattle for both showing and stock sales. Working with bulls her entire life, Rawnsley’s training and instinct means she can read a bull’s mood.
Judging of the Murray Grey and Lowline sections will commence on Wednesday 9 November at the Canterbury A&P Show. Rawnsley will also judge the Beef Interbreeds held later in the day.
With three days of continuous equestrian and livestock competition, close to 200 judges from throughout New Zealand and overseas will be attending the Canterbury A&P Show this year, including:
Peter Jorgensen, Victoria, Australia - Jorgensen will be judging in the Clydesdale Section; he has judged extensively throughout Australia and owns the renowned Box Valley Clydesdale Stud.
Philipa Pattullo, South Australia, Australia - Pattullo will be judging in the Shropshire Sheep Section. Pattullo has had considerable showing success over the years and has judged throughout New Zealand as well as in South America.
Fred Homeyer, Texas, USA - Homeyer will be judging in the Boer Goat Section, having judged over 15,000 animals in 110 Shows around the world including many National Shows. Homeyer is the only non-Brazilian to be certified as a judge by ABCBoer the Brazilian Boer Goat Association.
Val Fullerlove, United Kingdom - Fullerlove will be judging Alpacas, she is the best known as a British Alpaca Society Judge and is Europe’s only International Judge. Fullerlove has judged in the USA, Canada and Europe.
The 2011 Canterbury A&P Show will be held Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch. It is the largest A&P Show in the country attracting over 100,000 people, over 6000 livestock and feature competition entries and 500 trade exhibitors.
