Trout release at Lake Whakamarino, Tuai
Fish & Game Eastern Region will release 500 rainbows and 200 brown trout at the lake on Monday , November 7th.
The year-old fish will be driven to the lake from Fish & Game’s Rotorua hatchery at Ngongotaha in Fish & Game’s live trout transport unit.
Fish & Game Officer Mark Sherburn says that 700 fish are released annually into the small hydro lake which has a reputation for big, hard fighting brown trout and rainbows. The lake is known for producing fish over 4.5kgs.
Fish & Game officers will also visit Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera National Park to carry out maintenance on the lake’s remote water quality monitoring buoy.
The data collected is transmitted to a website every 15 minutes.
“The buoy is a valuable tool in assessing this remote lake’s water quality says Fish & Game Officer Matt Osborne. We are beginning to see some interesting data and the possible effects of environmental effects such as heavy rain fall and the likely effect that has on the trout fishery.”
