Glenholm (Rotorua) service arson attack

New Zealand Post appeals to Glenholm (Rotorua) service users after arson attack

New Zealand Post is investigating an apparent arson attack on a street posting box (a mailbox where the public posts letters) located in the Rotorua suburb of Glenholme.

The contents of a street posting box on the corner of Ranolf Street and Wallace Crescent outside the Ranolf St Superette were set alight by a person or persons unknown last weekend, on or about the evenings of Saturday 5 November (Guy Fawkes Night) or Sunday 6 November.

Mail sent between 2pm on Friday (4th) and the time of the attack has been burnt beyond recognition.

A small amount of mail was posted after the attack, and has been damaged by soot. These items have been retrieved and sent on in ‘damaged mail bags’ along with a short letter explaining the damage.

Trace remains indicate that the destroyed mail included (but was not limited to) at least 2 return voting papers for the Rotorua local body election, and at least 6 Hand & Mouth Xmas Cards. The total volume of destroyed mail would appear to be in the vicinity of perhaps 12 to 20 items

“If you sent an item in this Wallace Crescent street posting box during he weekend, please be aware your item may have been destroyed by this senseless attack,” New Zealand Post spokesman Michael Tull said.

"Those affected should consider whether they need to re-send that mail.

"This was a senseless act of vandalism, and we would appeal to anyone with information which may assist to contact Rotorua police," Michael Tull said.
