Early Rise for White Ribbon Campaign

Press Release: Early Rise for White Ribbon Campaign

Around 50 people attended the early morning breakfast for White Ribbon today in Manukau prior to the Auckland Launch later in the morning. Chair of the Auckland White Ribbon Campaign Committee and Manager of South Auckland Family Violence Prevention Network SAFVPN Raewyn Bhana said “this morning was a message we needed to give to our students” and it was pleasing to see so many attending this breakfast.

In New Zealand most violence towards women takes place in the home and in violence between couples, it is men’s violence that is most likely to cause serious physical or psychological harm. George Ngatai, Co-Chair of SAFVPN said he was saddened by this statistic including the most devastating one being on average 14 women a year are killed by their partners or ex-partners. “This has got to stop” he said.

More than 12 bikies also supported this event and they started their ride early this morning from Hamilton and will end their ride later tonight in Northland.

This is the beginning of the Auckland Launch of the White Ribbon Campaign and it is so good to see many of our men come out and show “they’re against violence towards men” says Ms Bhana. Later this morning Auckland Mayor Len Brown, Police Minister Judith Colins, Superintendent John Tims Counties Manukau District Police and Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Hon Georgina Te Heu Heu were launching this event in Manukau Square.
