Strengthening to Continue on Fitzherbert Ave

MEDIA RELEASE

20 December 2011

Strengthening to Continue on Fitzherbert Ave

Palmerston North City Council is to continue the upgrade of Fitzherbert Ave in the New Year. The reconstruction work is scheduled to start 9 January 2012 and finish in February 2012 while traffic numbers are reduced.

Work has been contracted to Higgins and will be carried out on the section of road between Ferguson Street and College Street, starting at the Ferguson Street intersection end.

The work will be similar to that carried out in January 2011 but it will not be necessary to excavate as much material and should not cause as much disruption.

Fitzherbert Ave requires strengthening due to approximately 16000 vehicles using the road every day.

During the reconstruction period Fitzherbert Ave will be reduced to one lane and speed restrictions will apply, however, some delays may be experienced. Some disruption to street parking and vehicle entrances may occur.

On completion Fitzherbert Ave will have a smooth and quiet asphaltic concrete road surface which will significantly reduce road noise compared to current levels. Road markings and parking will remain the same.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative streets where possible. PNCC regrets any inconvenience during this time.
