Oakura Cliff Face Tidied for Summer

Oakura Cliff Face Tidied for Summer

The section of cliff at Oakura Beach Holiday Park that slipped away during last weekend’s heavy rainfall has been cleaned up in time for the summer holiday influx.

The cliff face has today been hydro-seeded with grass seed to prevent wind erosion and dust nuisance.

“We should see grass starting to appear in about a week,” says Manager Parks Mark Bruhn.

“We will be replanting the cliff face with vegetation to stabilise it in the long-term, but the grass is a good short-term solution for the campers.

“After so much work done in a short time by the campground managers and contractors, the ground is ready to go for visitors.”

About 480m³ of soil slipped down the cliff last weekend.

An engineer’s report into the slip has highlighted the volume of rainfall in a short time, and the way the lie of the land at the top of the cliff directed surface water towards the area that slipped.

The Council will discuss the report with two home owners at the top of the cliff and ways that their land could be modified and maintained to reduce the possibility of a similar incident occurring during heavy rainfall.
