Bridge bits for sale
4 January 2012
In with the new, out with the old - while a new bridge is being built in one part of Whangarei District, bits and pieces of old bridges lying disused at other locations are being disposed of.
Over the years steel beams and platforms removed from repaired or replaced bridges across the District have been accumulating at a few vacant lots owned by Council.
A recent audit of these locations revealed roof beams, square RC beams, blue rolled steel joists, single rolled steel joists, decks and beams taking up space that needs to be cleared out.
“We decided to let the public know about these items, and make offers for them,” said Senior Roading Engineer Greg Monteith.
“They are old pieces of steel and timber and sometimes not in the best condition, but they might be just the thing someone is looking for,” he said.
“If people are interested in taking some of them away, we are keen to know – it reduces the cost of a clean up for us. We will contact a scrap merchant about any material that is not taken. The pieces are large objects and might be quite heavy to move, so the deal is that anyone who wants them needs to arrange removal themselves.
“People are invited to go onto our website www.wdc.govt.nz and look at the list of items and pictures of them and get in touch with us to let us know if they want to make an offer or investigate further. We will arrange site visits for people in mid-January.”
