Wellington's 30th Anniversary as a Nuclear Free City
Wellington's 30th Anniversary as a Nuclear Free City
An open letter to the Wellington City Councillors
Dear Councillors
This a reminder of the 30th Anniversary of our City status as a Nuclear Free City on the 14th of April 2012.
As you are aware the Welcome to Wellington a Nuclear Free City sign was removed unilaterally by one Mayor Prendergast in 2004 from its popular site on Stewart Duff Drive by Wellington Airport where it sat and greeted returning residents and visitors alike.
As ratepayers we are disappointed to not have had any say in the matter and unsure how Wellingtonian's feel about its replacement further up the road minus the all important Peace Symbol, unlit and on the wrong side of the road We take the liberty to attach the specifications of the removed sign for your convenience in the hope your art department can come up with a new version(s) for public consultation as soon as possible.
Signs as you know are very important and this one ( see photograph ) did us proud. We would like to make a motion; That Councillor Helene Ritchie is nominated to unveil the new sign as the councillor who moved the Nuclear Free motion into council chambers in 1982. On the occasion of our 30th Anniversary we kindly ask if the WCC events team has been advised and given a budget to organise a celebration on the 14th of April 2012 for our City?
A closed online E-petition on your website asking for the Peace Symbol to be restored on the current signage will be presented to you by the City is Ours Inc. at a strategy and policy meeting in the near future http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/e-petitions/ep/details/161
May Peace Prevail on Earth.
The City is Ours Inc.
