Objections to liquor store in Newtown being lodged

Media release from Newtown Community & Cultural Centre

Objections to liquor store in Newtown being lodged today

Concerned members of the Newtown community will formally lodge submissions opposing a liquor store planned for 90 Riddiford Street in Newtown, opposite Newtown School.

“Vee’s Liquor Store Ltd” would be directly visible from classrooms and the school playground, and open while kids walked home after school.

There has been considerable opposition from the community to the proposed liquor store. More than sixty local residents from Newtown attended a public meeting last month, and over 600 people have signed a petition opposing the store since the application for an off-licence liquor license was published in December 2011.

Up to 100 written objections are also expected, which would be a record number of oppositions to a liquor store in the Wellington City Council boundary.

Today at 4pm, these petitions will be formally handed to the Wellington District Licensing Agency at the City Service Centre of the Wellington City Council at 101 Wakefield Street.
