Aro Summer Fun: Seven weeks of community activities!

Aro Summer Fun: Seven weeks of community activities!

Saturday 25 February to Monday 9 April 2012

Aro Valley will have activities and events over a seven week period from 25 February to 9 April, with everything from e-waste recycling to ukulele bands.

The event starts this weekend with a kids’ toy market on Saturday, and also several bike rides that return in time for live music in the Park at 3pm. All activities take place in the Aro St Community Centre grounds and Aro Park.

The kids’ market, starting at 10am, will have stalls available for a gold coin, and kids can sell or swap their unused toys. Stalls are available on the day. There will also be a kid’s bike adventure course for the little ones, and a sale of reconditioned kid’s bikes. The local bike shop Dirt Merchants leads an introductory mountain bike ride around Aro Valley’s excellent tracks from 10am, and a family bike ride with picnic leaves at 11am. Postponement day is Sunday.

Sunday is sports day, with competitions starting on the hour in the Community Centre basketball court. At noon things will start with some Frisbee action, followed by cricket at 1pm using kiwi backyard rules and a tennis ball; 3-on-3 soccer at 2pm, street basketball at 3pm, and Aro Valley’s unique bike polo at 4pm. Everyone is welcome to join in. Games will be short and everyone will get a game.

The highlight of the seven weeks of events will be the Aro Valley Fair, held in the Community Centre grounds and Aro Park, on Saturday 24 (Sunday 25 if wet) March. The Fair encourages local, hand-made, sustainable and healthy goods. Aro Valley Preschool and Te Aro School will both be holding stalls and fun fund-raising activities, along with a wide range of stalls selling clever crafts and interesting artefacts.

Other planned activities include evening outdoor films, garden tours, alternative energy displays, a family picnic, and live music concerts every weekend.

Coordinators and volunteers for some of the activities are still being sought – don’t be shy to step forward!
