Hamilton City Libraries to help mark NZ Book Month

NZ Book Month will be celebrated in Hamilton with a series of events held throughout March. The local events are being coordinated by Hamilton City Libraries in collaboration with Wintec, University of Waikato and other individuals.

Hamilton City Libraries Acting Community Programmes Manager Bryony Hawthorn said the local NZ Book Month events will include everything from book readings, author talks and writing workshop, to a photography exhibition and literary pub quiz.

“The purpose of NZ Book Month is to highlight literacy and the power of books in enhancing and changing our lives,” she said.

“The range of events on offer throughout March means there will be something for everyone, of all ages and interest groups, and reinforces the important role that books play in all of our lives.”

The events include:

Rocket Story Time 2012 launch with Sharon Holt (Saturday, 3 March, 11am at Garden Place Library): Author Sharon Holt talks about her two new children’s books.

Death on Demand with Paul Thomas (Tuesday, 6 March, 6pm at Dinsdale Library): Bestselling crime writer Paul Thomas talks about his latest book Death on Demand.

An evening with Sue Orr (Thursday, 8 March, 7pm at Wintec House): An evening with former journalist and speechwriter to the Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright Sue Orr. Gold coin entry.

Beyond the Cordon – Christchurch’s quake through a police photographer’s lens (Wednesday, 14 March, 7pm at University of Waikato): Police photographers Warrick Pearson and Nigel Fookes take you on a photographic journey into the red zone following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Play reading: Cow by Jo Randerson (Thursday, 15 March, 7pm at Garden Place Library): Carving in Ice theatre productions presents a taster rehearsal reading of their upcoming production of Cow by kiwi playwright Jo Randerson.

NZ Book Month Literary Pub Quiz (Monday, 19 March, 6pm at The Bank, Victoria St): Teams of four test their knowledge of the literary world. $2 per person.

Short Story Writing Workshop with Michael Morrissey (Saturday, 24 March, 9am-4.30pm at University of Waikato): Day workshop with University of Waikato writer in residence Michael Morrissey. $65 per person.

Country Calendar Cooking with Allyson Gofton (Tuesday, 27 March, 7pm): Celebrated Kiwi cook Allyson Gofton brings the taste of the country to your kitchen. Gold coin entry.
