Auckland Welsh Choir in Takapuna's St Joseph's Church
Media Release February 2012
Auckland Welsh Choir to Sing in Takapuna’s St Joseph’s Church in Support of North Shore Hospice
Following the Auckland Welsh Choir’s exhilarating concert last year for St David’s Day, the choir is pleased to return to Takapuna’s St Joseph’s Church for its annual celebration in tribute to St David, Patron Saint of Wales. The concert is also supporting the North Shore Hospice by donating all profits from ticket sales.
In contrast to its recent and highly successful performance of Mendelssohn’s music with the Devonport Chamber Orchestra, the Auckland Welsh Choir is delighted to return to its Celtic origins for this special event. Presented in the strongly Celtic programme will be a varied and accessible repertoire, showcasing the beloved songs of Wales.
Last year, young string players performed Celtic tunes arranged by Director of Music, Diana Rhodes for chamber music ensembles, alongside the famous Beethoven arrangements of Welsh Songs. This year, the choir will explore the sounds of brass instruments as they take up similar challenges. Harp and solo singers will contribute to the diversity, and the piper may again ‘call the tune’ from his vantage point high in the choir loft.
The Auckland Welsh Choir featured a large presence during the Rugby World Cup thorugh performances at Party Central, Manurewa World Cup festival, College Rifles and appearances on Maori TV, SKY TV, French TV and the BBC.

About the Auckland Welsh Choir
Côr Cymreig Auckland, our own Welsh Choir, is proud to be associated with the Welsh musical tradition and to maintain a generous slice of Welsh music and language as a cornerstone of the choir's existence in New Zealand.
The Choir is an accomplished fourty-strong, four-part, mixed choir. Offering a wide ranging repertoire from its cornerstone Welsh and Celtic sounds, to the lyrical and sacred; performed in English, Welsh, Latin and German, while also sung in A Capella, accompanied by the orchestra.
Concerts are community fundraising based, providing a platform for established musicians as well as up and coming young performers, soloists and choristers. We aim for concerts of variety and style, up to six in any one year, and these take place throughout the country.
For more information on the choir, go to www.aucklandwelshchoir.co.nz and contact through secawc@gmail.com. Rehearsals are on Thursdays, St Barnabas Church, Mt Eden, 7.30pm.
