Community views sought on draft Arts Agenda

Nurturing and championing the city’s arts community and creative output is the aim of Hamilton City Council’s draft Arts Agenda, which is now open for public comment.

Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker says the Arts Agenda is an important document for the creative sector and for the city as a whole.

“It’s intended to drive continued growth of the creative sector. We have a strong arts community but we need to do more collectively to share that in our region and with the rest of New Zealand. The Council is taking a lead role in bringing this together and leading a partnership approach to delivering better outcomes for the city,” Mayor Hardaker says.

Five key priorities have been identified in the draft Arts Agenda: growing visibility and community engagement in the arts sector; integrating art into a wide range of activities in the city; centralised advocacy and promotion of the arts in the city; enhancing Hamilton’s desirability as a location for studying arts and developing a career in the sector; and developing facilities and spaces which allow the city’s arts community to flourish.

Development of the Arts Agenda began in March 2011, following recognition of a need for Council-coordinated leadership in the arts sector. It has already generated robust discussion in the city, and gained support from institutions and stakeholders, and public feedback is an important part of the process.

The draft Arts Agenda can be found online, at www.hamilton.co.nz/consultation. Two public information sessions have been arranged: 5 March, 12 noon-1pm at Waikato Museum, and 8 March, 6pm-7pm, in the Rotary Room at Hamilton Gardens.

Feedback can be given three ways; online at www.hamilton.co.nz/consultation, posted to Strategy and Research Unit, or hand-delivered to the Strategy and Research Unit’s reception, on the second floor of the Council building. The deadline for feedback is 4.30pm, 12 March. Feedback will be reviewed by the Arts Agenda Working Group, and an edited Arts Agenda will be presented to Council in April.
