Wild weather forecast for weekend

Wild weather forecast for weekend

Horizons Regional Council will be keeping an eye on rainfall, tides and river levels as strong winds and heavy rain spell an indoor weekend for the region’s residents.

Metservice forecasters expect a low to deepen rapidly as it crosses the Tasman Sea on Friday, bringing gale force winds and causing waves of up to 6.5 metres along the east coast from Cape Turnagain to Mataikona.

Horizons emergency manager Shane Bayley said although the weather may put a dampener on weekend plans people should heed warnings to stay inside, stay away from the beaches and watch out for surface flooding on the region’s roads.

“We will continue to monitor rivers and rainfall throughout the weekend and update as necessary if the situation changes,” he said.

Up-to-date information on river heights and rainfall will be available via Horizons 24 hour Waterline. People wishing to access this information may call tollfree number 0508 4 FLOOD or visit Horizons website www.horizons.govt.nz
