Scenic new home for historic building at Wellington Airport
Wellington Airport is preserving a historic terminal building by moving it to the eastern end of Lyall Bay with the view to providing a café and public amenities.
The new site will have direct views of the runway touchdown zone and the Lyall Bay surf break. “We expect this new community facility to be hugely popular with families and the many people interested in the Airport and Wellington’s signature surf beach,” said Steve Sanderson, Wellington Airport’s Chief Executive.
The Aero Club previously occupied the building and it had been the Club’s headquarters since 1933. The Club now operates from a nearby hangar and it is proposed to incorporate a display of the building’s long history into the new development.
“We want to make the best use of this original airport building. The airport has the opportunity to move it to a great location with public access and develop it to provide attractive and convenient facilities for the many beachgoers, plane spotters and dog walkers that enjoy Lyall Bay,” said Steve Sanderson, Wellington Airport’s Chief Executive.
The back of the building was originally the house of the Aerodrome Superintendent and the front section was the Union Airways Terminal Building, located next to the first control tower at the Airport. The separate buildings were joined together in 1958. This will be its second move, the first was done on rails from what is now the middle of the runway in the 1950’s to its current location on the Western apron. The Airport agreed with the City Council to preserve the original building after Wellington Airport was privatised.
The Airport will move the building on two trucks down to the vacant lot on the corner of Cochrane St and Moa Point Road late next week, just in front of the Air Force building and directly overlooking Lyall Bay.
