New growth for the Hutt CBD

New growth for the Hutt CBD

More life is being added to the Hutt City CBD with the planting of street trees along High Street, between Margaret Street and Andrews Avenue, Laings Road and Bloomfield Terrace.

The plantings are part of council’s Making Places project which aims to maximise the potential of the CBD by making it a more attractive place for people to visit and businesses to set up shop.

Project manager for the new plantings Colin Lunn says the trees chosen to smarten up the streets are known to thrive in urban environments.

“Several years ago we planted Plane trees on High Street but they have not grown well. We now have the opportunity to replace the ailing trees with new species that we have already trialled on High Street and other locations across the city and are confident will flourish in our CBD,” he says.

Replacement of the Plane trees on High Street is already under way with work set to be completed by the end of March.

Work to improve conditions for trees on Laings Road and Bloomfield Terrace will start in April.

The palms on Laings Road will be relocated to Bloomfield Terrace where they will be planted in new tree pits.

New tree pits on Laings Road will also be built to house new, more appropriate plantings. Several new tree species will be introduced to provide different shapes and forms to the CBD.
