PRESS-RELEASE: The City is Ours reports Peace Symbol missing.

On the occasion of the City's 30th anniversary of being Nuclear Weapon Free, plans for celebrations are under way all over the City says the City is Ours Inc. On Saturday the 14th of April 2012 this Wellington event starting at 2.00pm, rain or shine, will feature a special guest; the Peace Symbol, at Te Aro Park in Central Wellington.

To compliment the days activities the President of the City is Ours Inc. Maria van der Meel kindly requested Paul Andrews, head of Parks and Gardens, to allow for a Peace Symbol 3 meters in diameter to be mowed into the lawn at the sharp end of Te Aro Park. She further encouraged Mr. Andrews to not stop there and mow as many Peace Symbols as possible all over the City in keeping with our reputation as the creative Capital in celebration of our nuke free status.

A presentation of E-petition 161 on the 15th of March by the City is Ours Inc. at a Strategy and Policy meeting asking for the Peace Symbol to be re-instated onto the "Welcome to Wellington, Capital of Nuclear Free New Zealand" sign at the Airport was declined by council officers. Their recommendation to elected members was; this could be addressed when the time comes to replace the sign.

The City is Ours did not hesitate to ask elected members for 2 new signs with the peace symbol, one at the Airport and another at the Waterfront to greet returning residents and visitors alike. Wellington residents are invited to embrace their Nuclear Weapon Free status and chalk the Peace Symbol on the footpath outside their house and/or on private fences, the CND Peace Symbol has no copyright.

Councillor Helene Ritchie moved the motion that declared our City Nuclear Weapon Free in 1982 by order of the Wellington City Council. New Zealand celebrates 25 years of Nuclear Free legislation in June 2012 so leading the world.
