Wind Damage Continues at Pukekura Park
Tue 20 Mar 2012
High winds are causing extensive tree damage throughout Pukekura Park, and the public is advised to stay away.
“The wind is continuing to damage trees, and pine cones are blowing out and being a risk to anyone nearby,” says Curator Pukekura Park Chris Connolly.
“We’ll advise when the park, including Brooklands, is safe to enter again.”
The area around Brooklands Lawn has been particularly badly hit as it is more exposed than the rest of the park, with large trees having been brought down by the winds.
Access to the Brooklands area was already closed due to the pack-down of the WOMAD festival (which has been delayed due to the weather).
Earlier today New Plymouth District Council advised the public to stay out of all parks and walkways for the time being.
The 52ha Pukekura Park is a Garden of National Significance.
• Among other large trees damaged around the district is a 150-year-old puriri on New Plymouth’s Barrett Road, a notable tree which has split because of the high winds.
