Preliminary Results For Maaori Representation Poll

Maaori wards will not be introduced by the Waikato District Council following a poll on whether or not to introduce Maaori wards which closed at noon today.

The preliminary results of the Maaori representation poll are:

FOR the establishment of Maaori Wards: 2,517
AGAINST the establishment of Maaori Wards: 10,111

Voter turnout was 30.16 per cent (or 12,672 electors from 42,017 electors) and 8 informal votes and 36 blank votes were received.

The outcome of the poll is binding on the Waikato District Council for the next two triennial elections (2013, 2016).

As Maaori wards are not being introduced, the council will now complete its representation arrangements review to determine the number of councillors, number, and names of wards required for the 2013 triennial elections.

This process is expected to be completed by August 2012.

For more information on this poll, please contact the electoral officer, Waikato District Council, telephone 0800 492 452.
