Help Needed to Stop Rubbish Dumping in Reserves

The Waikato District Council is seeking public help to curb the growing problem of rubbish being dumped in the reserves of Huntly and Ngaruawahia.

Council reserves are being treated as dumps for items ranging from grass clippings and green waste to large pieces of furniture such as beds.

“Waikato residents are reminded that dumping rubbish in any park or reserve is illegal, and offenders are liable for prosecution and a fine of up to $20,000,” said Water & Facilities general manager Richard Bax.

It costs the council thousands of dollars to deal with the problem of illegal dumping – money that could be better spent on new playgrounds or other community facilities said Mr Bax.

Particularly badly affected are two areas in Huntly; the reserve in Rosser Street and Baker Block, but dumping is also occurring in a number of locations across Huntly and Ngaruawahia. In some cases houses that back onto reserves have thrown their rubbish over the fence.

“We are asking for the community’s help in identifying those responsible,” said Mr Bax. “If anyone sees rubbish being dumped, please call the council on 0800 492 452 and report it.”

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to help keep the Waikato clean and tidy,” said Mr Bax.
