Lest We Forget
As we approach ANZAC day, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive Ann Martin is speaking out following a string of disturbing assaults on older New Zealanders.
Recent reports include the case of an 87 year-old man who was pushed to the ground and taunted by a group of teens after he asked them to get down from a tree on his property. He was left bruised and bleeding. In a separate incident a 95-year-old man required surgery after being stabbed in the head and today a 74–year-old Dunedin man was knocked out in a road rage attack.
Martin says Age Concern believes all people deserve respect, and this kind of violence is a real concern.
“It‘s an act of cowardice to pick on anybody who is vulnerable,” she says.
In today’s road rage attack, the older man was involved in a minor collision after failing to give way.
Martin says older people are generally safe and cautious drivers.
“We often don’t know why people take the action they do and also anybody can make a mistake. This does not give another person the right to take the law into their own hands.”
“Older people are important members of society who contribute hugely in terms of knowledge and are some of New Zealand’s most active volunteers.”
As
we approach the 97th anniversary of ANZAC day, Martin urges
New Zealanders to remember the outstanding contribution and
sacrifice made by many older people and reminds everyone of
the importance of a society that values people of all ages.
