974 Have say on NRC Draft Long Term Plan

974 Have say on NRC Draft Long Term Plan

About 974 submissions have been received on the Northland Regional Council’s Draft Long Term Plan 2012-2022, with proposals for flood protection works and ongoing support for the region’s rescue helicopter service common themes.

Long Term Plan Project Manager Angela Jane says it’s pleasing to see so many Northlanders getting involved through the month-long consultation period which finished on Thursday 19 April.

“This plan for what the council delivers over the next decade will ultimately affect everyone in the region, so we’re really grateful to those who have taken the time to have their say on it.

“Our councillors have a big job ahead looking at the arguments presented by submitters and trying to make decisions that work best for Northland in the long run – there’s a lot more to it than just counting numbers for and against.”

Hearings over the next week will give submitters another chance to share their views with councillors.  The hearings are being held in:

Dargaville (Town Hall, Hokianga Road) at 10am Wednesday 02 May;

Kaitaia (REAP Centre, 33 Puckey Avenue) at 10am Thursday 03 May;

Kerikeri (Kingston House, 102 Hone Heke Road) at 2.30pm Thursday 03 May and 9am Friday 04 May;

Kaikohe (Far North District Council Chambers, Memorial Avenue) at 2.30pm Friday 04 May; and

Whangarei (Northland Regional Council Chambers, 36 Water Street) at 10am Monday 07 May and 9am Tuesday 08 May.

Ms Jane says the council has written to all submitters to advise them of the hearing dates and their appointment times.

Councillors will then meet to consider submissions in Whangarei on Wednesday 23 May and make any necessary changes ahead of a meeting in Whangarei on Tuesday 26 June to formally adopt the Long Term Plan 2012-2022.

A summary of the draft plan was distributed to letterboxes throughout Northland in mid-March to coincide with the start of the submission period.  That summary – and the full draft plan – can be viewed on the council’s website at www.nrc.govt.nz/draftltp

Consultation on Northland’s Draft Regional Land Transport Programme 2012-2015, which ran during the same month-long period, attracted 92 submissions.   The draft transport programme is on the council’s website at www.nrc.govt.nz/draftrltp

Ms Jane says submitters on the transport programme have also been advised of details for hearings, which will run alongside hearings on the Draft Long Term Plan.
