Paul Cameron Recognised at NZ Sport and Recreation Awards

Paul Cameron Recognised at 2012 New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards; Wellington Well Represented.

Wellington region sports administrators were well represented at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards Dinner in Rotorua last night, confirming that sport and recreation is in good health in the Capital.

Ex-CEO of Sport Wellington, Paul Cameron, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.

This comes after 15 years as CEO of Sport Wellington, where his many achievements included the growth of AMI Round the Bays, the Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards and advocacy for the new $47 million ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

Not just an administrator, Cameron was also wore the Silver Fern, picking up two caps for the All Whites, debuting against New Caledonia in 1972. He remains a committed member of the Halberg Trust, a charity which works to enhance the lives of disabled people by enabling them to participate in sport. The award is just recognition for the role ‘PC’ has played in the development of Sport in the Wellington region, and beyond. Cameron said he was “surprised and humbled” by the announcement.

Lifetime Achievement awards were also presented to Kapiti based Peter Dale, former Chief Executive of the Hillary Commission and now Chair of the New Zealand Community Trust and to cricket veteran and former Sport Wellington Board Member Patricia McKelvey (CNZM, MBE).

Wellington event legends Lynne and Arthur Klap won the Commercial Partnership Excellence Award for the relationship between the New Zealand Winter Games and Tourism New Zealand. Lynne and Arthur are long time supporters of Sport Wellington, having organised ‘Round the Bays’ for a number of years. Lynne is still active as a judge on the panel of The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

“These award winners have all shown an enduring commitment to promoting the benefits of sport and recreation to all New Zealanders.  They represent the pillars on which our sporting culture is built.  We thank them deeply for their contributions,” Sport New Zealand CEO Peter Miskimmin said.

Sport Wellington’s own awards, The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards, take place on Thursday 21 June at the Wellington Town Hall. Nominations close on Monday 7 May and can be made at www.wellingtonsportsawards.co.nz
