Last Section of Hotel Grand Chancellor Comes to a Spectacular End

The final section of the Hotel Grand Chancellor has been demolished.

Late yesterday demolition workers from Fletcher Construction brought down the final, five story high section of the building.

CERA Engineer John O’Hagan says, “This was the most dangerous and difficult demolition undertaken since the earthquake so far and it has all gone extremely well.”

Fletcher’s Project Manager Simon Chambers says, “The process of propping the building and the lifting of the roof was particularly complex. At one stage we had two 4.5 tonne diggers on the roof of the building breaking pieces off so the crane could lift them down.”

For the next few weeks work will focus on processing the debris remaining on the site. Diggers and grinders will break down the rubble, separate the concrete from the steel and remove it from the site. The remaining rubble will be ground down to gravel to use as fill on the site.

Once the debris is cleared the ground floor slab and the foundation will be removed. All work is expected to be completed in three weeks.
