New section of Hamilton riverside pathway to open
23 May 2012
A new section of riverside pathway will open in Hamilton’s Te Hikuwai Reserve next Tuesday, 29 May.
The 290-metre Te Hikuwai path completes the pathway loop in the city’s northern suburbs and is seen as a vital link for the walk and cycle way along the eastern bank of the Waikato River.
Completion of the eight-month pathway development will be celebrated on Tuesday, 29 May at 11am, with an official opening by Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker which the public is welcome to attend.
Mayor Hardaker said the new path, which adds to the existing 17.35 kilometres of riverside walking and cycling path in Hamilton, will be a valuable resource for the city.
“The Waikato River is a big part of our city and our network of riverside walkway and cycleways is a great way to connect with and appreciate the river. It is exciting to open this new section of pathway and I am sure it will be well used by many walkers, runners and cyclists.”
Hamilton City Council City Development Manager Andrew Parsons said construction of the path proved challenging due to the site’s steep terrain, groundwater and soft upper layer of soil. Deep foundation poles with anchors were used to ensure the boardwalk’s stability.
“The design of the pathway was developed between Hamilton City Council, AECOM and Kingan Landscaping. The experience and innovation that Kingan Landscaping bought to the project has helped to manage the overall project cost of $800,000 and greatly reduced the environmental impact on this site,” he said.
“We are thrilled with the result and look forward to seeing the community utilising and enjoying this new feature of our city.”
