Regional Councillors Go in to Bat for Capital
Connection
Horizons Regional Council’s
today agreed to pursue a joint funding proposal between
Horizons Regional Council, Greater Wellington Regional
Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to
continue the Capital Connection rail service.
The
commuter service has been struggling since the extension of
the Metro rail service to Waikanae in 2011.
In
combination with a fare increase for passengers, the funding
model would enable the service to continue but it is reliant
on support from all three parties.
Councillors
heard that the shortfall needed to be found by the three
parties is estimated at $435 000, to be shared between the
three parties.
Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon said
that investigating the joint funding model was the first
step in the process and the outcome would be subject to
public consultation.
"If we can establish a joint
funding arrangement then we will undertake a special
consultation with our community"
Mr Gordon said
that if the service was discontinued alternatives would be
investigated.
“We don’t want commuters left in
the lurch and if we are unsuccessful in maintaining the
Capital Connection then other services need to be looked
into.”
