Taranaki: It's thyme to tend the herbs

It's thyme to tend the herbs

11 June 2012

The arrival of the shortest day next week heralds the time to tend to herbs – and home gardeners can pick up some useful tips at a free workshop at Hollard Gardens, Kaponga, on Sunday (17 June).

Workshop topics will include:
• Propagation methods (dividing, taking cuttings or growing from seed).
• Planting garlic.
• Construction of “vertical gardens” (made from old pallets) so you can grow culinary herbs and medicinal herbs close to the kitchen for easy access.

Attendees are encouraged to bring excess plants or herbs from their gardens to swap or share.

The herbs workshop runs from 2pm to 4pm and will take place at Bernie's Home Garden, a demonstration area at Hollard Gardens where a number of different food growing principles and ideas are put into practice.

Sunday’s workshop is part of a year-round programme of free events at Hollard Gardens, Pukeiti and Tupare, the three heritage gardens owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region.

For more information, see www.hollardgardens.info, www.pukeiti.org.nz and www.tupare.info. Social media users can also follow the Regional Gardens on Facebook (TaranakiRegionalGardens) and Twitter (@TaranakiRG).
