Museum awarded for excellence at national property awards
ROTORUA 13.06.12 : Rotorua District Council's (RDC) museum has won a national 'Award of Excellence' at the prestigious 2012 New Zealand Property Industry Awards.
The award represents excellence in ’Heritage and Adaptive Reuses of Property’ for work on Rotorua Museum 's recent extensions, including the new Don Stafford Wing, which completed the council's $22 million Centennial Development project.
It has taken more than 100 years to complete the iconic Bath House building, in which Rotorua Museum is housed, to the architect’s original design.
RDC chief executive Peter Guerin, who attended the awards in Auckland last week, said the award was independent endorsement of a superb world class project driven by the Museum Centennial Project Team and headed by Lyall Thurston.
"It's great to see acknowledgement of the very effective coordination by our project manager Sheryl Kirner of RDT Pacific who worked collaboratively with the project’s various professionals, including contractors, architects and engineers on what is an extremely unique building. In particular it's acknowledgement of successful management of the challenging ground conditions that we had to contend with."
Sheryl Kirner said being involved with the Rotorua Museum restoration was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
"To see this heritage project through to completion 100 years after its inception was an honour.
"Recognition for the hard work by the whole team by way of the 'Award of Excellence' from the New Zealand Property Council was a very proud moment for us all," said Ms Kirner.
Property Council NZ Chief Executive Connal Townsend said the very best of the country's commercial properties were represented at the awards. He said this year's awards highlighted the fact that the commercial sector was highly motivated and determined to keep raising the bar on the standard of commercial properties in new Zealand .
