New venue for celebration night
With activities at The New Hub suspendedfor two weeks, the annual Nelson Tasman Youth Volunteer Recognition celebration has moved to a new venue.
Certificates of thanks will be presented to allnominated young volunteers at a special evening at the Nelson College hall, on Thursday 21 June, as part of Volunteer Awareness Week. Nominations closed on 1 June.
Chair of Volunteer Nelson, Mary Curnow says thechange of venue was unavoidable with the suspension of operations at the New Street building following concerns over the poor earthquake rating.
“It’s been great that Nelson College have been able to accommodate us at such short notice – they’ve been really helpful,” she says, “so we can look forward to an evening of celebration acknowledging the contribution that so many young people make to our communities.”
Minister Jo Goodhew, Minister for the Community & Voluntary Sector is attending the Youth Volunteer Recognition event to add her own note of thanks, along with Vanisa Dhiru, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand and both Nelson City and Tasman mayors.
Entertainment will be provided by local young performers and will include inspiring stories of achievement from Tomo Chisnall, who skated across NZ in memory of a friend he lost to cancer, andPaige O’Brien from Canteen.
This is the eighth year that the contribution of young volunteers has been celebrated, with nearly 160 people nominated this year. All nominees will go in the draw to win an 8gb iPod touch, with those making the nominations having the chance to win dinner for two at Stefanos and a movievoucher from State Cinema. Spot prizes will also be presented on the night.
