Ashhurst bus contract awarded
Horizons Regional Council is looking forward to another five years of efficient bus services following Tranzit Coachlines’ successful retender for the Ashhurst bus contract.
Tranzit has been operating the Ashhurst service on behalf of Horizons for the past five years and in that time fares have remained steady at $3.00 per single adult trip or $6.00 return.
When the new contract comes into effect on Tuesday July 10, fares for adults and children over five will increase by 50 cents to $3.50 and $2.00 per single trip respectively. SuperGold card holders and under fives will continue to travel for free.
Chair of Horizons Passenger Transport Committee Vern Chettleburgh says the increase is the result of rising fuel and running costs however the service will remain a cheaper option for those who would otherwise travel by car.
“Fares on the Ashhurst service have been maintained at their current prices for about a decade. Through this time we have seen increases in fuel prices and GST and are now at the stage where we need to raise fares slightly to ensure the service is sustainable,” he says.
The route and timetable will remain the same with Horizons bus services operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information on the timetable visit the Horizons Regional Council website www.horizons.govt.nz or contact Horizons’ transport team on toll free 0508 800 800.
Services from Ashhurst to Palmerston North are also offered by commercial operators Tranzit Coachlines Wairarapa, Intercity, Naked Bus and Rose Coachlines for those wishing to travel on days when the Horizons service does not operate. It is best to contact these companies directly for further information on times, fares and pick-up points.
