Ring Road roundabout lane closures begin next week
Ring Road roundabout lane closures begin next week
27 July 2012
Hamilton’s Wairere Drive-River Road roundabout will be reduced to one lane at times next week as removal of western, northern and central traffic islands begins.
The roundabout, one of the city’s busiest junctions, will become intersection controlled by traffic lights as part of the Hamilton Ring Road project. Work on the roundabout began last week, but from Monday 30 July, weather permitting all entrances to the roundabout will be reduced to one lane for the majority of the works.
Hamilton City Council City Development Manager Andrew Parsons says the lane closure will be on-going as removal of the central traffic island was a significant task.
“This is a crucial phase of the Hamilton Ring Road project, and it will disrupt traffic,” Mr Parsons says.
“We’re urging motorists to use alternatives routes, stagger their journey times, work from home if they can and use public transport. Council is also part of the www.letscarpool.govt.nz initiative, which aims to help people find ride shares, so we’re encouraging commuters to explore that option as well.”
Mr Parsons says the lane closure, like all work on the roundabout, is subject to fine weather.
