High Commissioner kicks off Olympic celebrations

High Commissioner kicks off Olympic celebrations

Olympic Live Site celebrations at Queen’s Wharf will be kicked off tomorrow morning by the British High Commissioner to New Zealand Vicki Treadell.

The High Commissioner will go one-on-one with former mayor Kerry Prendergast in a soccer cage at 7.45am (Saturday 28 July).

Wellington people are invited to Queens Wharf to watch the 2012 London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony at the NZ Olympic Museum. Five large television screens will show the spectacle in London and visitors can send messages of support to the NZ Olympic team. Several former New Zealand Olympians will also be visiting at the Museum.

Wellingtonians can especially cheer on local Olympian and New Zealand flag bearer Nick Willis as he leads members of the Kiwi team into London Stadium.

Also on offer tomorrow at the Museum is a free breakfast BBQ (for as long as supplies last) – bacon butties and sausages in bread, hosted by the British High Commission. The Ignite Sport soccer cage will be available for a kick-around in by children and adults alike.

NZ Olympic Museum Director Charles Callis encourages people to visit the Olympic Museum before or after Saturday morning sport – perhaps dressed in their sports kit or national costume. The Museum is open every day 8am – 4pm until 13 August.

The Olympic Live Sites, promoted by Sport Wellington in partnership with the New Zealand Olympic Committee, aim to bring like-minded sports people together to enjoy an Olympic atmosphere and cheer on our New Zealand team members.

“One of Sport Wellington’s strategic priorities is to give everyone the opportunity to reach their personal goals within sport and recreation environments – here we celebrate with local athletes who might aspire to an Olympic future in addition to providing venues for the public to experience the Games,” says Sport Wellington CEO Phil Gibbons.
