Parachuting incident
At about 2.05 pm on the 16th of August Police were called to the Motueka Airport.
A male parachutist had landed heavily on the airport grass.
Initial enquiries reveal that it appears that when the man deployed his main chute, it failed to operate properly causing him to "cutaway"
He then tried to deploy his reserve chute however this was not possible.
As a result his reserve chute deployed automatically at about 750 feet above the ground.
It slowed his descent however he still landed heavily and sustained as yet unknown injuries.
He was immediately treated by other jumpers and a Dr for his injuries until the arrival of the Emergency helicopter and Ambulance.
He was transported by emergency helicopter to Nelson Hospital for further treatment.
