Airport supports NZTA decision

Wellington Airport is right behind the NZ Transport Agency plans to progress the ‘Option A’ bridge option around the Basin Reserve to reduce congestion and provide more space for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians.

“One of Wellington’s points of difference is having a genuine city airport only 6-7km from the CBD that is quick and easy to access. Business and leisure travellers value their travel time and Wellington is a great base for visitors to easily fly in and out. These advantages will be lost without a good connection to the CBD and out to the wider regions. Wellington Airport welcomes the developments to this highly significant section of State Highway 1,” said Wellington Airport Chief Executive, Steve Sanderson.

Mr Sanderson said passenger numbers are forecast to double from five to ten million by 2030. “Reducing congestion along this route and providing capacity for growth is critical to the economic future of Wellington and managing the forecasted growth.”

“Travel times in Wellington already have significant variations due to congestion with the trip between the Airport and CBD taking between 13 and 45 minutes. We are supportive of the process and initiatives to promote public transport that make it easier and safer for everyone to travel.”
