1000 rainbows top up Capital Trout Centre
Over a thousand rainbow trout have
been delivered from Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery to
the Capital Trout Centre at Happy Valley, Wellington, in
readiness for the upcoming kid’s fish-out days.
Each year hundreds of budding young anglers gear up for an opportunity to catch their first fish.
The upcoming open day will be held on Sunday, September 2, and there will be skilled anglers from the Wellington Flyfishers Club to help novices get started.
Wellington Fish & Game manager Phil Teal says all the fish are of catchable size but there are also a few larger ones put in to give one or two kids an extra thrill.
Mr Teal says this is a fantastic community facility and community event.
“It’s a great opportunity for young children to hook their first fish and maybe catch the fishing bug.
“Children have a lot of fun at these open days but the results last far longer by giving them new skills, teaching them patience, and connecting them with the outdoors.”
To manage the large number of children keen to benefit from this facility it was necessary to create a booking system – Steve's Fishing Shop, Wellington, Hamills, Thorndon, or Hutt Valley Hunting and Fishing, Lower Hutt.
As well as the exceptionally popular children’s fish-out days, there are additional one-off introductory angling events for other groups such as children with cancer, hearing impaired children, and scout groups.
