Not All Youth Support
‘Keeping It 18’
The Manurewa Youth Council wants
to make it clear that not all young people support keeping
the alcohol purchase age at 18.
Young people have a
diverse range of views on this important issue, and the
‘keep it 18’ campaign does not represent all young
people.
“The Manurewa Youth Council has engaged with
young people from across Manurewa on this issue and we have
heard of the problems that alcohol causes in Manurewa. One
of the solutions consistently put forward by young people is
to not only give the community more say into the allocation
of liquor licences, but also an increase in the alcohol
purchase age to 20,” says Simeon Brown, Chair of the
Manurewa Youth Council.
“The Manurewa Youth Council
is pleased to note that both the Manurewa MP Louisa Wall and
National list MP Cam Calder who is based in Manurewa have
pledged their support for an increase in the alcohol
purchase age.”
“We understand that there is a
diverse range of views on this important issue, and
encourage MP’s to consider the views of all young people,
while making a decision which represents good policy,”
concludes Mr Brown.
A vote on this part of the Alcohol
Reform Bill is expected later this week in Parliament.
